Aitiai as Middle Terms
نویسندگان
چکیده
Aristotle’s aitiai (‘causes’) are middle terms in Aristotelian syllogisms. I argue that stating the aitia of a thing therefore amounts to re-describing this same an alternative and illuminating way. This, turn, means its really one under different descriptions. The purpose paper is show view implied by account explanation, it makes more sense than might expect.

Treating Terms as Idioms
It is recognized that electronic management of terminology spans a large range of activities. It is important to have easy access to well structured terminologies, but it is also relevant to model and recognize terms within a text. This allows, among others, multilingual cross references and the development of advanced indexing tools. The aim of this paper is to explain how we model and treat t...
متن کاملLambda Terms Definable as Combinators
It is well known that for each l-term there is a corresponding combinatory term formed using the combinators K and S instead of the I-operator. Similarly for every combinatory term there is a i.-term. For weaker sets of combinators such as B, C and K or B, B’, I and W we show how such a correspondence or “translation” can be formulated and we determine in the case of several such sets of combin...
متن کاملChinese Bare Nouns as Kind - Denoting Terms
This paper addresses an interesting array of facts about Chinese common nouns in some detail. For example, Chinese common nouns, in their bare forms, often stand alone at argument positions, display a variety of context-sensitive interpretations, never combine with numerals without an intervening classifier, and combine with a plurality marker in a highly selective way. It is argued that this w...
متن کاملQuantifiers as Terms and Lattice-Based Semantics
When a first-order logic (FOL) is used to represent the semantics of natural language, natural language quantifiers are dealt with in terms of explicitly quantified FOL formulas. This semantic account has several problems. It fails to provide a uniform semantics for all the noun phrases that appear in an argument position of a verb in the surface syntax. With this analysis, it is harder to comp...
متن کاملGentzen-style Classical Proofs as -terms
We show that the Gentzen-style classical logic LKT, as presented in Danos et al.(1993), can be considered as the classical call-by-name (CBN) calculus. First, we present a new term calculus for LKT which faithfully simulates cut-elimination procedure, namely tq-protocol. Then, we give a translation of Parigot's -calculus. This translation can be seen as the classical extension to the Plotkin's ...
